WHAT IS ST. DAVID'S DAY ?

St David is known as dewi Saint in the welsh language. First of all, he was a church official and later he was considered as a saint and as the patron saint of Wales. A patron saint was a Christian saint who believed to give special help to a particular place, activity person or type of object. He was also a Celtic monk who lived in the sixth century and was the archbishop of Wales.He compared with the other national patron saints of the British Isles, Saints George and Andrew and also fairly a lot of information about his life. As a result, the number of churches were devoted to him in terms of showing his vast influence.

Besides, David was known throughout his life as a strong religious holy man and there were many miracle qualities or characteristics that he represented.For example, He was usually showed standing on a little hill and there was also a dove on his shoulder.

It is declared that David lived for over 100 years, and in general, it is accepted that he died in the year of 589 on tuesday First March(now St. David day) as well as he was buried in St David's Cathedral in Pembrokeshire.

St David was an important figure to the Welsh. Naturally, St David day is a time of great celebration in Wales.Commonly, people celebrate this day with special meetings and events almost everywhere in Wales.. As a matter of fact, it is taken part in a religious ceremony in first March every year and in St. David’s Hall, Cardiff; there will be a concert which is consisted of 1000 member’s male voice choir, especially for the occasion.

St. David was a patriotic who wore small, ornamental leeks and daffodils on first March to celebrate the Principality's own saint's day. The daffodil is the national flower of Wales and at present on Saint David's day, many people celebrate by wearing a daffodil.
As a consequence, now it is traditional custom to wear either a leek or a daffodil in Wales on that day. Males usually wear leeks or daffodils. On the other hand, younger girls wear their Welsh costumes which consist of a long woollen skirt, white blouse, woollen shawl and a Welsh hat.
